photography for me is like breathing: see the beauty, take the shot.
so much of what we take for granted is revealed in a single frame if it’s captured just right.
i endeavor to use available or common lighting in my shoots and to style, rather than manipulate the subject, to give the most honest capture for its most sincere expression. i feel it’s there – in the capture – the viewer meets the emotion we’re wanting to convey, on a clean, honest palette.
location shoots are my favorite, because the subjects – even the food – seem to evoke a better presence in their home element.
which is why i love to shoot abroad. in spite of (or because of) the struggles of the unfamiliar, seeing and capturing culture in its most native essence becomes journalistic, a way to bring hidden beauty to light.
i’ve recently opened to shooting stills for independent films, which i will not say is my bread & butter, but the collaboration between the crew & actors on set is so . . . intriguing, literally putting the movie together, and that inspiration flows over into my other work. when you hear a filmmaker or actor say it’s like a drug, believe them!
it all comes down to the message: what do you want to say today? how will you evoke, inspire, teach, reach or convey? it can be accomplished in a visual voice.
